Tencent, owner of China’s largest social media platform WeChat made a surprise announcement last December, ahead of the platforms 5th birthday that has everyone in China’s social media industry talking. The platform is now fully accessible to overseas businesses!

Previously, overseas businesses operating branded “official accounts” where limited to content publishing functionality on unverified accounts only. In order to gain access to the platform’s full range of API functionality it had to be a China registered company with a China registered bank account in order to get verified.

That has all changed now. Starting this month overseas businesses are now able to go through regional agents to:

  • Verify official accounts – Not only does this provide assurance to followers that they are following a brand’s official account, it provide identify protection to brands from fraudulent accounts operating on the platform. As well as enhanced follower information and analytics.

  • Set-up a WeChat Shop – Perhaps WeChat’s biggest USP is that brands can house a mobile optimised e-commerce store within their official account allowing followers to directly purchase products within the world’s fastest growing mobile commerce platform. Further integration with WeChat Payments allows for auto-login and one click payments for products from the WeChat shop. This is already a popular function amongst China established brands like Coach, H&M, Sephora and many others.

  • WeChat Payments – Again previously only available to China incorporated entities, overseas business now can integrate WeChat payments onto a WeChat store, their main website and even setup instore payment terminal to accept payment through WeChat Payments and have funds paid into an overseas bank account of their choice. This allows for quick and easy payments from the 250m WeChat Payment users just like Paypal or Apple Pay.

  • Targeted Ads – Direct Chinese consumer targeting is the bane of many advertisers. With WeChat having 650m monthly active users it has never been easier to reach them. WeChat and the entire Tencent family of applications allows for programmatic in-app display advertising based on CPM impression rates, with filtered targeting options such as age, gender, education level, interests and even location. This makes WeChat the only digital platform that allows advertisers to directly target Chinese consumers when they are in a specific country outside of China.

    Fascinating, what are you sources on this? I follow WeChat developments pretty closely but haven’t seen this mentioned in either English or Chinese. Would be a great step if WeChat were be able to offer this type of account

    Ive been following wechat for a while to and use it. I’m looking at it as an easy way to make payment to suppliers for samples from china. I now have the payment wallet enabled but it doesn’t seem to accept any UK bank card, which is frustrating
